You've gotta love The Daily Show. Not only is it a highly entertaining show, it also frequently touches nerves that few other mainstream media outlets dare touch. In this case, as many times before, the target is a member of the media itself. Take a look at the clips below. Parts 2 and 3 of the interview are especially impressive.

What's Spinning Now? (March Edition)
Last Month Revisited
First, an update on the music I posted on Feb 5. Now I've had a chance to form more definite impressions and some ratings:A Camp - Colonia: Enjoyable album overall. Several songs have good staying powers while others are a bit bland. (6/10)
Fever Ray - Fever Ray: This one didn't do as much for me as The Knife. Don't know why - the sound is very similar. (4/10)
Trost - Trust Me: This album is phemonenal - go get it! (9/10)
The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age Of The Understatement: Uneven but several very good tracks. (6/10)
Larkin Grimm: I'm still mesmerized by Ride That Cyclone. It's a very simple, repetitive song so you'd think I'd get sick of it, but, oh no! (9/10)
Jolie Holland - The Living And The Dead: Also a bit uneven, but enough good songs to make it worthwhile. (6/10)
Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid: Very enjoyable album. (7/10)
This Month
And, onto the new stuff! I've gotten a lot of new music lately - too much to get my arms around so these are early impressions:
Heartless Bastards - The Mountain
The third album from this Ohio-based band immediately draws you in with Erika Wennerstrom's impressive vocals. Seems very good so far. They are currently touring together with Andrew Bird, whose latest album Noble Beast is his best effort in a while.
Loney Dear
A pseudonym for Swedish one-man band Emil Svanängen, Loney Dear just finished his tour with Andrew Bird - that guy is a slut! ;-) - and had I gotten my act together and gone down to Tucson to see the Andrew Bird Valentine's Day show I would have caught both of them. Anyway, promising low-key stuff so far.
Morrissey - Years Of Refusal
This looks to be Morrissey's strongest work in quite some time. That's probably all you need to know.
Neko Case - Middle Cyclone
Neko Case is one of the lead singers from The New Pornographers, and her last album - Fox Confessor Brings The Flood - was very good, so I'm jumping on this new album being released today. More to follow...
Passion Pit - Chunk of Change [EP]
I'm normally not a fan of electro/dance music, but who can resist the wonderfully playful Sleepyhead, from this Cambridge, Massachusetts-based band? Crank it up and you won't be sitting still!
U2 - No Line On The Horizon
Anyone who knew me in the 80s will remember that I was a HUGE U2-fan. In my mind, their stretch from 1983 - 1991 (War, Under A Blood Red Sky, The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree, Rattle And Hum, Achtung Baby) may be some of the greatest musicmaking in the modern era.
Since then, they've been a very good, sometimes great, band, and this album appears to continue in that vein.
Female Tribute to Tom Waits (Vol 1-3)
Three bootleg double-disc albums, chock-full (121 songs in total) with women covering their favorite Tom Waits songs. Mostly unknown artists, but also tracks by Cat Power, Diana Krall, Jane Birkin, Joan Baez, Lucinda Williams, Marianne Faithfull, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nastassja Kinski, Neko Case, Norah Jones, Sarah McLachlan, Shawn Colvin, Tori Amos, Tracy Bonham and 10,000 Maniacs.
A lot of good stuff, but also a number of duds, live versions with poor sound quality, etc.
Dark Was The Night
Another HIV/AIDS benefit album from Red Hot (also check out the excellent Red Hot + Blue Cole Porter tribute album from 1990) and this one is a doozy! It's a double-album produced by members of The National.
Here is a sampling of the artists: José González (covering a Nick Drake song), Feist, Bon Iver, The Decemberists, Iron and Wine, Sufjan Stevens, Arcade Fire, My Morning Jacket, The New Pornographers, Stuart Murdoch (from Belle and Sebastian), Cat Power, Andrew Bird... Yowza!
War Child Heroes
A charity album from War Child, which provides assistance to children in war-torn areas, and this one is filled with great and interesting covers: Beck covering Leopard Skin Pill-Box Hat (Bob Dylan), Duffy covering Live And Let Die (Wings), Elbow covering Running To Stand Still (U2), Franz Ferdinand covering Call Me (Blondie), Lily Allen covering Straight To Hell (Clash), TV On The Radio covering Heroes (David Bowie), Rufus Wainwright covering Smile (Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys)... A great album for a great cause.
Ok - I've got some listening to do!
