The top of the world

I just found out that one of my MIT classmates climbed Mount Everest. I don't know her but I was taken in by this picture from the top of the mountain:


Pretty amazing. It took 63 days to climb up and 17 to get down. More info/pictures here.

that's lhotse in the background, and the famed hillary step in the lower right. may is the primary climbing month for chomolungma (traditional name) because of weather, but you have to get down before the monsoon arrives in early june which makes recrossing the kumbu icefield too trecherous. the great imax film is a must see. it was filmed in 96, just after the tragedies that inspired "into thin air". they certainly were having great weather in the picture. quite an accomplishment to make it up (and down!) safely.

Wow - I didn't know you knew so much about climbing. I did see the Imax film many years ago - it was pretty incredible.
